A Simple Spring Lawn Care Checklist for Columbus Homeowners

Every spring in Columbus, the same thing happens. The first warm weekend hits, everyone rushes to the hardware store, and half the lawns on the block get scalped, dumped with the wrong fertilizer, or overseeded at the exact wrong time. A few weeks later those same lawns look worse than the ones nobody touched at all.

There is a better order. Here is what actually helps a Columbus lawn come out of winter looking strong, in the sequence that matters.

1. Wait until the ground is dry to walk on

The single most damaging thing a homeowner can do to a Columbus lawn in early spring is walk on it, mow it, or rake it while the soil is still saturated. Every footprint compacts the ground and every mower pass tears out the crowns of the grass. Wait for a stretch of dry days, then start.

2. A light cleanup, not a hard rake

A gentle rake to lift the matted debris and any leftover leaves is helpful. A hard dethatching rake in the middle of March is not. If the thatch layer is genuinely thick, wait until the grass is actively growing before you touch it.

3. First mow at the tallest setting

Set the mower blade high for the first cut. Cutting short in early spring stresses the grass right when it needs energy to green up. As the season goes on you can drop the height gradually, but never take off more than a third of the blade in a single mow. That "third rule" is the difference between a healthy Columbus lawn in July and one that looks bleached.

4. Pre-emergent, not post-emergent, in early spring

Crabgrass control has to go down before the soil hits about 55 degrees. In Columbus that usually falls in early to mid April, but watch the forecast rather than the calendar. Post-emergent broadleaf sprays can wait until you actually see the weeds. Putting pre-emergent down after crabgrass has germinated is money wasted.

5. First fertilizer visit around late April

A light, balanced fertilizer application in late April kicks the lawn into gear without pushing it so hard it stresses in the first heat wave.
